Mokihi
Mokihi were the whitewater craft of Otago’s Maori, Kai Tahu Whanui. The boats were quickly constructed from buoyant material, such as the raupo or korari that grew abundantly near the waterways. Early European settlers also learnt how to make and use the boats – which they called “moggies”.

Encounter history at the Otago Settlers Museum. Learn about the people whose character, culture, technology, art, fashion, and transport shaped New Zealand’s First Great City.
